Thank you for this beautiful piece of writing and for this ode to one of my favorite characters ever. It is insane how much this show is undervalued when it actually should be taught in schools. From Buenos Aires with love, Luli.

thank you so much Luli. i think i’ll write more about buffy in the future because there is so much to say but i can’t do it without getting into spoilers which sucks but it’s probably the best show ever written. i don’t think even succession or the sopranos can touch it

As a Succession and Sopranos close-to-insanity fan, I agree: Buffy is more relevant. And I totally get the spoilers complication. I recently started writing about movies and had to find a way to work around it or even go ahead and include them with a warning. I do think tho there’s a lot we can write about Buffy the character without actually spoiling the show. Looking forward to reading you more!

I'm currently watching Buffy for the first time (I'm watching Season 4 atm), and I'm absolutely loving it, exactly for the humanity you write about. These characters feel so real to me, I actually miss them when I'm not watching the show. I never would've thought a new-to-me show could grip me like this again, at the ripe old age of 25. It's very exciting!

season four is not the best (beer bad etc) but the storyline about conformity and not trusting the gov and the military still feels fresh even today. these characters are all so flawed and i love it. have you watched Hush or not yet?

Not yet! "The Initiative" is the last one I've seen so far. "Beer Bad" was silly, but I didn't mind it. I kinda liked the monster-of-the-week vibe of season 1, even though everyone seems to hate it. They're like a pallette cleanser to me, especially when the main storyline is quite heavy. And season 4 is a little heavy, because Buffy is so sad, we don't get the Scooby Gang anymore, and Giles is less involved. I'm interested to see how the Initiative thing is going to play out, though, I'm unsure if they're good guys or not. Like, obviously vampires are (usually) bad, and killing them is (usually) good, but doing experiments on them? I'm not sure where I stand on that, and I'm not sure where the show stands on that either.

I'm watching the show with my sister, and we won't be able to sit together and watch it until early August, so it's going to be a while before I find out, but I'm excited at the prospect :)

oh Nena that’s so exciting you have great episodes ahead TRUST ME. once you watch Hush you don’t go back. it’s one of the best episodes of tv period. i like the monster of the week too usually when it has a link with the scoobies but when it’s like “oh now you have to care about that character you never knew about” im lowkey out. the storyline of s4 is less linear than in previous seasons where the main antagonist was easily defined and i like that about that season, i hope you do too

Yay!! I'm excited to find out :))

I get what you're saying about monster of the week. Beer Bad did have some character growth moments for Xander, which is nice. I thought he was getting quite annoying by season 3, like past the point of being funny, so getting this sensitive side of him, and him taking care of Buffy was really refreshing.

I totally agree with you; Xander finally sees some growth in S4 with him being the only one not in college and whatnot, which I always found to be an interesting choice for the writers. It would've been so easy to write him in the college storyline, but the writers were like, 'What if we made him a total loser?' and I was all here for it, especially after what he did to Cordy. I felt like he didn't see any growth in the third season, but he was a constant presence, which felt comforting, as he is representing Buffy's metaphorical heart. pls tell me what you think about Hush once you get to it, and Superstar is also a great S4 episode; there's also the elusive last episode of the season that has everyone scratching their head that's so fucking cool. S4 has a lot in store for you, and I hope you enjoy it all, but not Riley. Fuck Riley.

Just watched Hush last night and it was very good! The talent of the actors really came to light as they weren't able to speak. Such an interesting choice, as they usually talk *so much*. I also liked that this set-up forced Riley and Buffy to come clean to each other, 'cause the secrecy is always so frustrating to me. So far I do like Riley, but I'm careful not to get too attached lol, bc the Initiative stuff is so iffy to me. Ohh and also the Gentleman were só creepy! Those smiles will haunt my nightmares for weeksss

i watched buffy as a huge fan of series/ movies etc. about vampires and its the only one while watching i can relate with characters instead of running away from reality. and as you said buffy is full of humanity in it and that’s what i love the most about it.
