I really enjoyed this. I felt like the movie wanted us to believe she had agency and choice when she had none. Which reflects the flaws of our societal understanding of consent. Having sex with your abuser or loved ones dying? I couldn’t believe that’s the question the movie posed. We’re so conditioned to accept coercive sex, as if it’s not a form of sexual violence that quickly bleeds into assault. I left the movie feeling ill. And if the director wanted the movie to serve as a reminder that women often have no choice and are conditioned to sacrificing themselves, well that’s not a reminder we needed. We know this intimately.

thank you so much for your comment kiese i couldn't agree with you more. the idea of coersive sex in a modern movie that doesn't question it makes no sense to me. if this was supposed to be a retelling of the original story it didn't do a good job of accounting for the more modern point of view.

I watched it last night and I am not sure I understand your point of view here tbh I would not agree Ellen is sexualized in the movie. What about her was sexualizing, you never really said it? The plot is pointing to the end scene (the blood exchange/sex scene) since half the movie has passed as we find out she invited him in her childhood and they have had sex once already (Ellen says it herself "He took me as his lover" or something along the lines) so your point about her having sex outside of marriage does not stand really.

Also, her husband signed to give her away without knowing what he was signing because it was in old Romanian, so this is why she died, to fulfil the deal (even if it was fraudulent), like she can't be with a demon and be alive at the same time lol

What I want to say is you are looking into this a bit too deep.

I think this movie is not really to be liked as it is what it is. Objectively it was a really good adaptation, ridiculous at moments, gross most of the time and a bit terrifying and sad. A true

There is nothing wrong with being emotional. But being emotional leads you to being wrong much more often than being rational. Be emotional, but also be accountable for your actions. For some reason emotional people also seem to have issues admitting when they are wrong. 🤷🏽‍♂️
