i love how authentic you are man! hilarious wording with absolutely correct takes.
i don’t know if you’ve made a post on this one yet or if it even interests you, but what’s your opinion on the sabrina carpenter Manchild cover controversy? i usually don’t like pop culture think pieces and shit (i write research essays on here lol) but the way you write makes me like it!
thanks for your thoughts, looking forward to more!
hey Emily! thank you so much for the compliment!! i try to make reading fun with no bullshit takes that’s me to a T ;) i have no thoughts on the sabrina carpenter situation as she’s not an artist im familiar with but honestly i don’t care? if she wants to look submissive in her cover thats her and her marketing team’s business. and its more about marketing than anything with this one tbh, her entire sketch is to confront an overly puritan america for money and im not mad at it i just wish the music was better
for a few days i didn’t like it, but now that ive dove back into nonfiction women’s research i really have no thoughts on it either. like you said, it’s her and her marketing’s business, and the backlash she gets isn’t on me, so who really gaf?
also i so agree with you on that it’s marketing more than anything! i feel like that cover was probably ragebait, which while it isn’t positive attention, it’s still views on her posts and listens to her new song to criticize it on tiktok.
exactly she’s gonna get views on it because of the rage bait but that’s kinda all this is. there’s no point in writing a think piece on that subject that would just give her even more exposure that won’t necessarily be positive and i don’t like talking about pop stars if im not being positive about them because ive learned with taylor swift that these girls don’t need us to think their every move and interpret their every words when they’re also fighting the glass ceiling on their own level. so this is the one article where i’m breaking my rule and talking negatively i guess about pop stars but i think i wasn’t unkind in my observation
As someone who is generally too lazy to craft her own playlists— a bad habit I’m really hoping to break here soon before I actually lose my ever-loving mind— you hit the nail on the head. We’re truly suffering under the regime of an ultra stale capitalist pop machine.
you don’t even have to make your own playlists if you have spotify you can find highly specific playlists in the search bar tbh but yeah it’s capitalism’s fault 100%
This was the same argument made about The Spice Girls, The Beatles, and anyone Baron Gottfried van Swieten happened to Patronise at the time. You (the individual) are not the targe. We (the general mean) are. That means more individuals will connect, even if those who don't really won't.
I didn't really get "brat summer" but maybe that is more an age thing. That said, I can't get enough of Chappell Roan...
I also love the Addison album but it just feels like a product and not an album made by an artist. Like, yes she talks about new found fame and her inner fears of losing it, other usual topics but it all feels slightly soulless. But I’m happy that a new sound was introduced to us through this album along with new producers. So happy for an all women project after such a long time. Pop nowadays is run by jack antonoff, Ryan Tedder and Dan Nigro and this change was necessary. It has a scope for improvement but still, a good start.
Coming to Tate, yes I feel the same too. She feels too manufactured. Even when she’s talking about her personal life it doesn’t come off as authentic. Like sports car sounds cool but one can’t say that it’s not a Britney kinda song. She can dance well but then her lyrics are below average. Tbh I don’t think it’s her fault. She’s just 21 now and is still figuring out how to make big in this industry. I hope she finds her true sound and vision soon.
brat, is a cultural phenomenon and forever will be. It made us believe that sometimes something out of the box is what makes it special. You don’t have to be polished to deliver a pop bible. Brat defies every expectation from a pop album and delivers something truly amazing. It’s unique and wildly Charli and reminiscent of her old works. I should say, it’s a certified ‘club classic’.
2024 was a revolutionary year. Not seeing that to happen again in 2025 sadly. Ngl lorde delivered a promising and unique record but some lyrics are too esoteric and borderline offensive. Though the production is really interesting. That makes me want to listen the album more and more but I can’t take current affairs seriously. Anyway, let’s see what happens in 2025. Sabrina hopefully will give us a good album. I just don’t know anything at this point. Manchild is a vibe though.
oh this is fucking amazing. i just wanna say, your articles are incredible and even though i disagree with some of your opinions (some industry plants like addison are actually fire) i still enjoy your writing SO SO much. also, being 16 and having this energy on the inside and seeing it reflected on the outside world is beyond refreshing
As an older gentlemen it is torture for me to go to any retail establishment and hear the atrocious music being produced today. Fingernails on chalkboard. I understand that 13-year old girls are the market drivers. Back in the day we laughed at Muzak. Not laughing now.
I really appreciate your no-bullshit take on life. So many topics, same authenticity...it's refreshing in a landscape dominated by AI text and echo chambers.

"2024 was dominated by artists and Sabrina Carpenter for some reason, and I loved it."
🤣🤣🤣🤣😭
